How does Vitamin K1 work?

  • Anticoagulant rodenticides stop coagulation by preventing the activation of important cofactors in the clotting cascade.
  • This can have devastating results in untreated patients, and could mean that they would bleed to death.
  • These cofactors are dependent on Vitamin K1 for their activation, and it is the recycling of Vitamin K1 that is prevented by these poisons.
The only way to restart the cycle is to give Vitamin K1 to these patients until the rodenticide is eliminated from the body.
